Know the risk factors for Glaucoma

According to the Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the United States. Learning the risk factors for this critical condition could help you protect your eyesight. These factors include:

• A family history of glaucoma;

• Age – people who are older than 60 are at higher risk;

• A history of eye injuries – think sports or other accidents;

• Increased pressure in the eye;

• Using steroids;

• Having ancestors who are African or Spanish;

• Being farsighted or nearsighted;

• Diabetes or migraines

Having any one or more of these risk factors does not necessarily mean you will have glaucoma; it simply means you should work with your True Care Advantage eye doctor to closely monitor your vision and be aware of any changes. Your doctor will look regularly for signs of damage to the optic nerve and help you stay proactive about your vision.
